School Rules

These rules are taught to all students and how they relate to the classroom, bathrooms, cafeteria, recess, lunchtime, and throughout the school.  NVLA strives to foster a positive climate and recognizes students who are following the rules with a “delfinito.”  These delfinitos are deposited into a classroom bucket and names are drawn weekly for prizes.

Each classroom teacher sends home a copy of their positive classroom discipline plan at Back to School Night.  In this plan, specific classroom rules and expectations are outlined as well as consequences and recognition.



Our BEST Behavior Program is based on a positive behavior support model with our ultimate goal of developing self-discipline in all of our students.  We value a safe school environment where teachers can teach and students can learn.  We support our students in taking responsibility for their own behavior and making good decisions. All students are treated with respect and the expectation is that they will treat each other with respect as well. Although there are consequences for disruptive or unsafe behaviors, there are also lessons to be learned, and we support all of our students in learning how to behave in a safe, respectful and responsible manner. Our focus is on teaching expected behaviors and learning something from an experience rather than on blame and punishment.

All Common Areas
  • Walk facing forward
  • Keep hands, feet & objects to yourself
  • Get adult help for problems, accidents & spills
  • Use all equipment and materials appropriately
  • Use kind words & actions
  • Wait your turn
  • Clean up after yourself
  • Follow adult directions
  • Follow school rules
  • Remind others to follow rules
  • Take proper care of all personal belongings & school equipment

Lunch Area

Area Be Safe Be Respectful Be Responsible
  • Keep all food to yourself
  • Sit with feet on the floor, bottom on bench and facing tables
  • Allow anyone to sit next to you
  • Use quiet voices
  • Use “Please” & “Thank you”
  • While in line, use a quiet voice and keep your hands to yourself
  • Raise hand and wait to be excused
  • Get all utensils, milk, etc. when first going through the line
  • Have your lunch card ready
  • Clean up after yourself & others
  • Wait patiently
Lunch Tables
  • Keep all food to yourself
  • Sit with feet on floor, bottom on bench and facing tables
  • Eat & touch only your own lunch
  • Equipment is used only on the playground
  • Clean up after yourself & others
  •  Stay seated until the bell rings
  • Pick up 3-5 pieces of trash before playing
Lunch Line
  • Walk
  • Stay on the White Line
  • Wait patiently and quietly
  • Leave play equipment outside the cafeteria
  • Eat your lunch at the tables
  • One person at a time – wait at the door
  • If you are separated from your class, go to the end of the line
  • See Jane before school to pay or get a new card
  • Come with your lunch card and have it ready
  • If your lunch card is lost, have your name or # written on a paper


Playground and Yard Rules

  • Walk to and from the playground
  • Stay in supervised areas only – not in the hallways
  • Be aware of activities/games around you
  • Freeze when recess bell rings, wait for whistle then walk to line
  • Play fairly
  • Include everyone
  • Stay away from PE classes
  • Use hall/nurses pass to leave the area
  • Use the correct bathrooms
  • Hold equipment in line
  • Wait in line patiently & quietly
  • Keep feet on the floor
  • Keep water in the sink
  • Wash hands
  • Put towels in the garbage
  • Knock on stall doors
  • Give people privacy
  • Use quiet voices
  • Flush toilet after use
  • Return to room/playground promptly
